Family Therapy

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.

-Jane Howard

We all belong to some form of family.

Families can be created through biology, adoption, fostering, or through some specific act for deliberate connection. The idea of family can generate feelings of warmth and nurturance, but sometimes the reality of those feelings can, in part, be complex and painful.

Family therapy, or meeting together with members of your “family”, can help to rebuild trust, develop a better understanding of these relationships, and awaken feelings of closeness.

Family Therapy At The Brandywine Center

Are you dealing with any of the following issues?

  • Unresolved conflict with an adolescent or adult child
  • Struggles with your child’s behavior
  • Adoption issues (including birth parents, adoptive family, adoptee)
  • Grief and/or loss of a family member
  • Aging parents and their need for increased care
  • A family member’s chronic illness
  • Blended or Step Family issues

Family therapy can help with these issues as well as many others. In family therapy, the client is the family unit, and typically the family is seen together for sessions. At times, different dyads may meet with the therapist to address the issues at hand.

Family therapy at The Brandywine Center is an active therapy, encouraging each family member to take responsibility for the problem and the solution to the problem. Through more open dialog, family members can learn to understand each others’ unique perspectives as well as move toward increased empathy, closeness and healthy connection.
